Review: The Jellies “Mervin for Mayor”

Marge wasn’t the ONLY mayoral race tonight.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Mervin the Mayor runs for mayor and he’s gotta go up against the incumbent Leonard Jenkins who runs around standing on top of his mother. Meanwhile, Debbie Jelly is trying to get help for her addiction to alcohol which goes as well as you’d expect. She actually stops off at a self-help meeting with a couple of celebrities in tow, but that doesn’t help much.

Our Take

It’s tough running two plots in a 12-minute episode, and I’m not sure “Mervin for Mayor” pulls it off. Mayoral plots are a dime a dozen and I’m not sure this one stands out that much except for Leonard on his mother’s back throughout the whole episode which, I gotta admit, is hilarious. Also, I’m not sure we’ve invested THAT much time in Mervin the Whale this season to warrant a whole bit that would cause the viewer to have a vested interest as to whether or not we’d care if he’d become mayor in the first place. I mean, we really were only properly introduced in the pilot episode…that was aired last week.

I actually much preferred Debbie Jelly’s attempts at getting sober. The self-help group is HYSTERICAL, and for whatever reason, The Jellies franchise has this obsession of having people do this Home Alone thing with their hands where everyone looks like Edvard Munch’s The Scream painting. Furthermore, Kanye gets ROASTED, and that’s one asset this show has that hasn’t been fully fleshed out in this version of the show just yet, DECIMATING celebrities. Hopefully, this week’s episode of The Jellies can be the catalyst to seeing more of that. The Jellies is slowly coming out of its web app shadow.
