Review: SpongeBob SquarePants “The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom”
You might need a new pair of Squarepants after this one!
Overview (Spoilers Below)
This very special episode of Spongebob Squarepants features a rather familiar tale of trying to scare the unscareable on a holiday that makes a bunch of money on cheap thrills. The battle features Spongebob, who apparently thinks Halloween is funny as hell and The Flying Dutchman, who is kinda like the Grinch of Halloween but still wants to make sure everyone is good and scared this season. The Dutchman sets his sights on Bikini bottom where he wants to do everything he can to haunt Spongebob into being terrified, whether it’s by taking the souls of his friends or even going inside the Spongey head of our titular character, The Flying Dutchman tries everything until he learns that Spongebob’s biggest fears are so scary that it even scares the ship captain.
The Flying Dutchman leaves, everyone gets their souls back in their bodies, and that’s a wrap on Spongebob’s Halloween episode.
Our Take
In terms of a plot or a premise, yea, it’s a rather familiar territory. But, the winner of this episode is by far the visual presentation by Screen Novelties. Everything from live-action to stop-motion to big huge Muppet-like puppets to even marionettes running all over the place, the Spongebob Squarepants special was a sight to behold. I’m actually surprised that Nick aired this episode during the fringe hour because they could’be made a case to have this one air at around 9 pm given all the horror-like elements thrown into the 30-minute special. Turn off the lights for this one, you won’t regret it!
SCORE

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
