English Dub Review: Seven Mortal Sins “Ask, and It Shall Be Given to You”

The sins of Vanity and Pride go head to head… again, so who will win… again?

Spoilers Below

Lucifer. Lucifer will win because this show has the most mind numbingly brainless yet hilarious formula when it comes to Lucifer’s arc. Pathetic loss, torture, prideful boasting then victory. It’s like clockwork and the only reason the last episode felt like it was different was that it was more the half hour sexy torture time show. Actually, the show is still the half hour sexy torture time show but it’s that sexual stupidity that makes over dramatic shlock like today’s narrative twists feel so pitifully inept.

Last time Lucifer passed out from exhaustion on Vanity aka Belial’s door step so of course, today’s episode opens with Lucifer getting a nice beating from a whip, which for me was one of the more weaker torture scenes. Especially when you consider all the sins are currently undergoing vastly more devastating tortures and punishments. It’s odd that the series gives me ample material to judge the severity and sexualisation when comparing torture scenes of all things. Regardless Belial reveals that she is also a fallen angel like Lucifer and she’s been gunning for revenge against Lucifer since the beginning as Lucifer was the one who threw Belial into hell. Also, we finally get… probably an explanation as to what Lucifer did by putting her angel’s blood in Maria’s body. The best way to summarize it is that Lucifer put her blood in Maria as running angels’ blood through a human appears to act as a filter so that it can be infused into a demon lord which Belial has done to get “super angel powers.” Or whatever power as after the traditional friend forced to kill another friend trope is played Lucifer gets all her power and beats the snot out of Belial saving the day.

This episode feels like it should be one of those “ah-ha!” twist episodes where we are rewarded for our viewing of this narrative with a surprise that throws off expectations. However, the show just does not have that level of intrigue for me. When this final confrontation is taking place while all the women in the room are all bare ass naked, you have lost me way before you also try to attempt a plot twist. This is a goofy show. I just wish Seven Mortal Sins would just pick whether it wants to be tongue and cheek or whether it wants to be over dramatic gush. Unfortunately, the stale acting from Lucifer and Belial makes any over dramatic emotion feel like I’m watching planks of wood recite the lines. Well, maybe planks of wood with beach balls taped on them.

After a two week wait for this to release what we get feels like such a non-episode. Like Seven Mortal Sins believes it has established so much character with Belial, Lucifer, and Maria but… no. It established nothing, while arguably Lucifer is the most established of the three, Maria just comes across as a Stockholm syndrome effected dolt. Lucifer kidnaps her and thrusts her into this life of constant stripping of her clothing and demon fighting and I just can’t wrap my head around why she is characterized as almost idolizing Lucifer when she literally does nothing for Maria.

Seven Mortal Sins is a show that lacks any sort of emotional connection. It’s a show that states emotions and shows off censored cleavage and presents itself as both a self-aware joke and a detailed narrative but has no idea what that actually entails. However, with the next episode where Lucifer is fighting angels it seems like things are gonna be wrapping up and after all of this I’ll be happy it is over.
