Review: The Gorburger Show “Best of Gorburger”

After a brief hiatus, we check in with Gorburger on his season finale fresh from his appearance at Comedy Central Clusterfest!

On The Gorburger Show “Best of Gorburger,” it’s classic Gorburger. Guest of Paul F Tompkins joins. At the onset, there’s a discussion of the proper use of good vs. well. Then, The Gorburger Show launches into its delightful tongue in cheek talk show format.

Gorburger interviews Tompkins about his current projects. As Tompkins reveals his improvisation work, Gorburger suggests names for Paul’s improv group: “Paul F and the Turks,” “Daddy Rainbow and the Little Ones,” “Father Figure and Other People, “Call it Like You Pee it,”  and finally “Shit Where You Eat.”

Talk turns from improv and podcasts to attire. Then there’s a game, “Worm Association,” where Gorburger throws out various worm names. For instance, Gorburger throws out “gummy” and Tompkins offers “squish.”

But then The Gorburger Show makes a leap where it’s never been. There’s a faux infomercial offering the “The Best of Gorburger” featuring Andy Dick. This 36 part VHS tape collection is for sale. Unlike a traditional infomercial structure, Andy Dick is actually set up in the studio. The lights dim, and the camera pans to Dick selling the VHS set. “At least the price [of the set] is right,” Tompkins quips.

One of the best moments arrives when Gorburger makes fun of puppet comedy. “What, are we trying to make Labryinth funny? Like Dark Crystal took a shit on the idea of comedy.” There’s no bloodlust from Gorburger in this episode, and the show ends fairly anticlimactically in comparison to other The Gorburger Show entries.

Nevertheless, this is exactly what makes “Best of Gorburger” such a classic. It’s goofy, full of interviews which range from insightful to insane. Games are hilarious lampoons from what’s on late night TV. “Best of Gorburger” includes a nipple identification game and word association game. Then there’s the infomercial with Andy Dick. I appreciate how it’s not only the bizarre gags as seen on The Gorburger Show but it’s a unique format as well.
