Review: The Gorburger Show “Ghostly”

Patrick Swayze would be a bit taken back by this series.

The Gorburger Show is riotously hilarious both in its lampoon of talk shows as well as zany antics. On “Ghostly,” Gorburger (T.J. Miller) speaks with special guest, rapper Danny Brown. “You and William Shakespeare both have a thing for rhyming,” Gorburger asserts. “Do you think women from Shakespeare’s day were as freaky as women today?” Brown hypothesizes no. “They didn’t have no Summer’s Eve,” he laments.

Brown delves into his relationship with marijuana as well as the craziest interaction he’s had with a fan. Things get a little weird in the studio when a ghost appears. Despite Gorburger’s warning to not look the ghost in its eyes, Brown does. According to Gorburger, Danny is cursed and will die in approximately 22 minutes “give or take a few commercial breaks.”

Gorburger and Danny Brown play a few games, and GOrburger shows video clips of his visit to a puppetry studio. It’s called Viva la Puppet. Gorburger is a bit whacked out at the prospect of puppets being made and used. He asks one of the puppets if it hurts having its head rips off. The pug puppet replies that it’s nothing without its owner, Michelle. Gorburger refers to this as a Stockholm situation. While initially he’s freaked out by the puppets, Gorburger feels compelled to free the marionettes he encounters.

I like the reference to The Ring with the ghost that appears and the necessity to save Brown by finding its bones. Eventually, Danny finds the bones. But he has to give them a proper burial. Unfortunately, Danny ends up getting killed. I really enjoy how The Gorburger Show ends up killing off its guests continually. “Every time I get a new best friend, they die,” laments Gorburger.

The references to The Ring were fantastic, and Danny Brown comes as one of the most unique guests. He’s pretty candid in his delivery, and keeps calling Gorburger “GoB.” I would have enjoyed Brown giving a performance on the episode, but that’s a minor quibble. Another great episode of a fantastic show.
