Review: The Gorburger Show “A Murder Most Mysterious”

The Gorburger Show posts one of the strongest episodes of the season.

The Gorburger Show is delightfully grotesque, and “A Murder Most Mysterious” is even more hilarious. Featuring guest star Rob Corddry, there’s the usual slew of zany games but with a twist. A string of mysterious murders plagues the studio.

As with past episodes of The Gorburger Show, I enjoy the mix of actual interview dialogue and batshit insane segments. Gorburger goes from asking Corddry about his days as a correspondent on The Daily Show to playing the “Art or Fart” game. In this piece, Gorburger comes up with names and then gives Corddry a topic and asks if it’s art or a fart.

“A Murder Most Mysterious” features likely my favorite game so far from the series: name your Dagwood sandwich. Corddry names his Dagwood sandwich ingredients, which isn’t terribly crazy. But Corddry does throw out triple mayo, channeling Paula Deen perhaps.

One of the wackiest games finds Corddry demonstrating how he would kiss his mother, how he would kiss his wife, and then very specific situations. For instance, Gorburger asks how Corddry would kiss his bus driver. When Corddry says he wouldn’t, Gorburger makes up the scenario of Corddry’s wife being a bus driver.

Indie pop duo Sylvan Esso and New Orleans bounce artist Big Freedia appear as the musical guests. It’s an excellent collaboration. I had the pleasure of seeing Big Freedia as well as Sylvan Esso perform Hopscotch 2016. As a North Carolina native, I might be a bit biased in my appreciation of NC-based Sylvan Esso, but objectively speaking they’re fantastic.

The murder mystery subplot is a neat touch. I like how it just gets ignored, and instead of further probing the mystery Gorburger simply cuts to the musical guests. Including performances further, fosters the feel of an actual talk show. “A Murder Most Mysterious” comes as maybe my favorite The Gorburger Show entry to date. It’s witty, balancing talk show and goofy elements perfectly. Plus, “A Murder Most Mysterious” benefits from my favorite musical guests yet.
