Review: Adventure Time Elements “Slime Central”

Skate to assimilate.

Spoilers Ahead:

Finn and Jake get lowered to the Slime Kingdom, where everything has been fully slimed. They cover themselves in slime to blend in, but they don’t see anyone. They venture to the palace, where a guard hands them rollerskates.

The palace has been converted into a giant roller rink with loud music. Slime Princess is in the middle of the party, and she has become ten times larger than normal. Finn tries to jump inside, but he bounces off her slim. They meet LSP, who has become Lumpy Slime Princess. She asks them if they’re on a team yet, but they are interrupted by people calling for the Snack Pack.

The Snack Pack consists of three slime-i-fied princesses: Wildberry, Breakfast, and Hot Dog. They form a popular team but are challenged by Party Pat and the Slime Bears. They have a skate off, and the winner ends up being the Snack Pack. The winners are absorbed into Slime Princess’ body, and the losers are stripped of their skating rights. LSP and Jake find absorption interesting, but Finn is horrified.

Finn figures out that absorption is an easy path to get to the crown, so he suggests that they participate in a skate-off. LSP says that they need a three person team to compete, and coincidentally, she is kicked off her old team. In a fit of rage, she teams up with Finn and Jake and challenges her old team.

They try to skate well, but they don’t coordinate that well and end up losing. LSP’s old team is assimilated, and the three of them get thrown into a cage. As it turns out, the losers also get assimilated. The bears dissolve into the slime, and Jake starts to dissolve too. Finn tries to get to the crown, but the slime is too powerful. He starts to dissolve, but LSP yanks him out. They crawl out of Slime Princess’ body and escape the Slime Kingdom, but Jake gets dissolved.

Overview:

Jake is officially out of the party. There are mixed feelings about this because Jake is an important and stable part of the Adventure Time crew, but his approach this mini-series seemed a little too lax. Even when things are obviously wrong, he still tries to insist that everything is normal. He was willing to drink Lemongrab’s lemonade, and this episode, he thinks assimilation is comforting, rather than terrifying. That sort of passive approach to adventuring reflects Jake’s more relaxed nature, but it seemed too off-putting when the stakes are clearly very high. Either way, hope he comes back because Finn needs his best friend.

Slime Princess is implied to have grown in size because she has consumed the people of her kingdom. Although she can communicate, she has also lost the ability to use conventional speech. ‘Skate to Assimilate’ is the saying that the slime-i-fied people of the Slime Kingdom chant and everyone seems eager to be part of their leader. It’s questionable why the Slime Elemental wants to grow larger, but considering how Bubblegum wants everyone to be a part of her, it’s likely this same train of thought applies to all the Elementals. It’s a very creepy thought.
