Review: Sex Swing “Save the Princess”

The Princess won’t be the only one needing saving pretty soon.

Spoilers Below

“Save the Princess” is Sex Swing’s fourth episode, and this time, it begins with an event far in the past. The 1997 death of Princess Diana is pictured first. That’s followed by a cut to Schling (the reliable fool of the series) microwaving “circle food” – a food group that, if you’re not aware of, you should investigate. As Schling sits down to eat, a newscaster delivers the message that panda labor strike that’s plagued the country for some time is finally at an end. He moves on to even graver news: it’s been 20 years since the day of Diana’s death, which everyone in the audience should know – unless “you’re some kind of stupid, moron, child-brained idiot.”

It’s news to Schling. The band crowds around the closed door to his room, where his weeping is audible. Max enters the scene, as always, without any explanation of how he got there, and tells the band what becomes the premise for this episode: if Schling is ever going to get over this, he must save Princess Diana.

To do this, Max has engaged the services of Jean Paul, a French deception artist. Together – and with considerable whipping – the band members build a fake Paris. Jamez convinces Schling that the band has a time machine that he can use to travel backward in time, to right before the death of the princess.

Schling ultimately becomes a sort of hero, rescuing Princess Diana (Jamez in drag), but botching it. The episode closes on Jamez, still in drag, in a full body cast.

It is ultimately a not a very funny episode, and somewhat bland. Sex Swing’s formula is by now beyond question and may be best in binge-watching format. When set alone, the episodes lack force; it’s like watching a stand-up comedy set one joke at a time, spread over weeks.
