English Dub Review: Masamune-kun’s Revenge “Mysterious Cat”

Mark my words, this chick is trouble!

Spoilers Below

Masamune finally got Aki Adagaki right where he wanted her. After saving her life again, she was wrapped around his finger and completely trusted him. Enter Neko Fujinomiya, adorable destruction incarnate. She throws herself at Masamune, calls him by name, then runs. Infuriated that Masamune now appears to be a playboy, Aki tells him to go die and huffs off herself. Back in her car, with her driver, Neko smiles and comments that this will be a fun game. Joy. She’s that kind.

Masamune is now playing catch-up, having to regain the ground he lost to the girl whose name he didn’t even know. He buys an Aki-sized lunch and prepares to give it as a peace offering. Yoshino is on guard duty, keeping marauding Masamune’s away with her air-pellet Uzi. Even she has abandoned him after this, saying he’s on his own. He contemplates the best words to get Aki to forgive him, but in the end, opts to just leave the food for her, and walk away. He spends the rest of the night tossing and turning, wondering how to get his lady back.

Things aren’t much better the next day. Neko has transferred into his class and begins telling everyone romantic (and false) backstories for her relationship with Masamune. He pulls her out of everyone’s  earshot, demanding the truth. Not only does she not supply said truth, but she plies for his favor with her failing health, trumping it up by drooling ketchup to make it look like she was bleeding internally. He tells her that she’s never going to get him, that he’s in love with another girl. She asks him to point his love out, and of course, he points out Aki. She surrenders the fight to Aki, and apologizes for the misunderstanding before. One boy opens a window, to clean out the erasers. A sudden wind blows through, kicking up papers and skirts.

There are no panties under Aki’s skirt. Everyone can see this, especially Masamune and Aki. And Aki saw him look. Well, that’s no good. She storms out, and Masamune runs after her to explain himself. In their shouts and tussle, Aki accidentally punches out a teacher. They are sentenced to clean the pool. Aquatic follies ensue, and Aki falls into the pool, requiring a THIRD rescue. He claims that this time, it was a reflex, but says that only because he thinks she won’t believe him. She demands he prove his love to her. With a kiss…

So, the story continues to pick up the pace, and the introduction of Neko (Japanese for cat, if you’re new to this anime thing and missed the joke in the episode title) is a whole new fly in the ointment. She wants Masamune to herself and is using all sorts of below-the-belt tricks (haha) to get him. I was really entertained by this episode, and not because of the fan service. The characters are shining through a bit more each time, and I like it.

At the same time, I must also commend the work of Morgan Garrett and Josh Grelle, voices of Aki and Masamune respectively. They keep on getting better at their roles, and their characters are getting more and more believable each episode. I really hope that this keeps up. While this started as a show I didn’t think I’d like, it is starting to grow on me. I give it nine missing panties out of ten.
