Review: Steven Universe “That Will Be All”

At least for this week…

When we last saw Steven and Greg, they were captured by an Amethyst guard. That Amethyst brought the pair to a room full of Amethysts, including Steven’s Amethyst. It turns out that all of these Gems are from Earth. They’re even from the Beta Kindergarten. I guess that kinda makes them Amethyst’s family. So they are all helping Steven and Greg break out of the zoo.

Suddenly, the door swishes open. Holly Blue is standing there with Ruby, Sapphire, and Pearl. She yells at all of the Amethysts for not being at their stations in preparation for Blue Diamond’s arrival. The Amethysts run out of the room, hiding Steven and Greg behind them as they leave. Steven’s Amethyst tells the two humans to run. They will find each other later.

Steven and Greg end up in a large chamber with a bunch of bubbled gems floating in the air. It turns out that this was Pink Diamond’s sanctuary. Blue Diamond arrives, sobbing, and Yellow Diamond appears soon after. Yellow Diamond berates Blue (through song) for keeping the zoo and not destroying the bubbled gems. Apparently, these gems are from the same quartz that produced Rose. But Blue wants to preserve Pink’s memory.

Agate enters the room with Sapphire and Ruby. She tells Blue Diamond that Sapphire completed her delivery of the human. Of course, Blue has no idea what she is talking about. Sapphire, with the support of Ruby, tells Blue that her future vision predicted Blue’s wishes. She simply acted accordingly. Blue agrees that she wants to save more humans but there isn’t enough time. Yellow asks if the Cluster has formed. Sapphire tells them it has not, meaning they still have time to save the Earth.

The group is dismissed from the two Diamonds. Holly Blue is happy that everything went well but she is even happier that she got to meet Yellow Diamond. As she continues to monologue, Steven and Greg climb into the Roaming Eye. However, Holly Blue eventually sees them. She blames the Amethysts for allowing the humans to escape. Holly Blue begins to attack but Sapphire and Ruby re-fuse back into Garnet. The Crystal Gems all attack Holly Blue, eventually using her own whip to tie her up. Holly Blue threatens to tell the Diamonds that they have escaped. But Pearl points out that Holly Blue would be pointing out her own incompetence. With Holly Blue successfully shushed, the Crystal Gems head back to Earth.

This was a great ending to the mini-series. Seeing the two Diamonds interact was interesting. I wish we could have seen how all three Diamonds treated each other. Blue is more emotional than Yellow and Yellow seems to be stronger than Blue but where did Pink fit in? Not only that, the episode hinted that we might be able to get a Rose Quartz back. If all of the bubbled Gems in Pink’s sanctuary room were Rose Quartz’s, is it possible to unbubble one? Would it be like the Rose that Greg knew or would it have a completely different personality? We saw that the Amethysts are all pretty similar. Would that be true for the Roses too?

And after all that, it seems like the Diamonds might be coming back to Earth too. They did say they were going to try to save the humans from the Cluster. I can’t wait to see it!
