English Dub Review: Dragon Ball Super “How Dare You Do That to My Bulma! Vegeta’s Furious Transformation!?”

Never bitch-slap a super Saiyan’s wife!

Spoilers Below

In the last episode of DB Super, Beerus went to Bulma’s party and despite Vegeta’s efforts to keep him on his good side, he was unavoidably irritated when Buu denied him pudding and in response, Beerus challenged Buu to a fight which ended with Buu instantly getting owned.

The party goers witness this brutal display and react with outrage towards Beerus’ actions. However, the fighters express concern for Vegeta when they notice him sweating profusely and freezing up in extreme terror. It’s easy to for them to assume that Vegeta knows something about Beerus that they don’t. Bulma yells at Vegeta to actually do something so he flies up to try and calmly handle this and predictably, this goes about as well as you’d expect when Beerus tells Vegeta to get lost even after Vegeta offered to make him pudding.

Piccolo begins to notice that Dende is even shaking in terror and explains to Piccolo that he feels an insurmountable measure of energy he’s never felt before and immediately Buu gets up for Round 2 but is quickly owned again when Beerus throws him into the ship with just his foot and laments that he couldn’t even find a “Super Saiyan God” even on Earth.

Thankfully the tension & suspense is balanced with some comedic moments thanks to Whis, who is quickly one of the best new characters. Without him, Beerus would’ve straight-up destroyed the Earth after his petty spat with Buu and it’d be a much shorter show.

Whis begs Beerus to stay a bit longer due to his excitement over Japan’s common foods such as “Salmon, Egg, and Sushi” and his reactions to them help maintain DB Super’s level of humor even during the presence of a force of nature like Beerus. Beerus begins to lose patience and before he starts to blow up the Earth with just his index-finger, It doesn’t take long for Goten & Trunks to fuse into “Gotenks”, whose arrogance has him leading the charge against Beerus much to Vegeta’s apprehension.

Despite Gotenks being one of DBZ’s “heavy-hitters” in the group since the Buu Saga, he’s instantly defeated in a rather childish manner. During their battle, Gotenks explains what Dragonballs are to him (apparently, he doesn’t anything know their existence and simply thought they were a food). Beerus, while arguing with Gotenks, goes into a hilariously long diatribe about pudding because he legitimately never had it before which comes off as terrifying but you find yourself laughing at his rant about what his first experience of pudding would’ve been like for him.

Afterward, Beerus gives him the equivalent of an Indian burn by repeatedly smacking his right wrist in rapid succession before flicking his face into a wall. Next up, Piccolo, Krillin’s wife 18, & Tien enter into battle but despite their combined efforts, Beerus instantly wipes the floor with them without laying a single finger by moving at a blinding speed none of them have encountered before.

Beerus demands Whis to hurry up and notices he’s been eating without him but Whis assures Beerus that he’s preparing some food “to go” before they have to leave earth so Beerus decides to be lenient to his wishes and give Whis more time to do his thing. We cut to Gohan & Videl who are treating Hercule of his injuries and when Videl asks if anyone was holding back due to him being a “friend” of Vegeta’s, Gohan knows they wouldn’t, So he takes off his glasses estimating that they’re up against someone terrifying.

Buu makes a 3rd attempt and Gohan even steps up but neither of them can’t land a single punch on the purple cat-god and at this point Dende begins to realize who they’re up against before Beerus knocks both of them back into the boat. Vegeta looks around at the injured heroes and realizes must take action. So he attempts to make his last stand as a Super Saiyan against Beerus, however, Beerus paralyzes him and proceeds to stomp on his head which mirror’s the previous episode’s flashback of what Beerus did to his father several years ago.

Beerus is about to deliver the killing blow on earth but an unlikely opponent decides to give the god a well-deserved piece of her mind, A drunk & understandably pissed-off Bulma. She effectively lands a bitch-slap on Beerus (not that it actually hurt him) and unleashes verbal hell in regards to his extreme rudeness demanding his ass off her boat. Beerus bitch-slaps Bulma back knocking her out and Vegeta looks on in disgust and powers up screaming “What did you do to my Bulma?!!”.

The episode ends in cliffhanger fashion when Vegeta proceeds to power up, but this time his transformation crackles with a blue-lightning aura in combination with this anger making him even stronger than before and in the process breaking free of his paralyzing fear proclaiming that Beerus is “going to suffer for what he’s done”.

Our Take

Strangely Goku had zero screentime but the entire episode was spent on Vegeta overcoming his fears against Beerus and I think bitch-slap Bulma received was the “straw that broke the camel’s back” as they say. It’s great to see this side of Vegeta showing some level of affection for Bulma. He may not emote 80% of the time due to his militant attitude, but he will unleash hell if anyone hurts his family.

While Dende had very little screentime in this episode, the emphasis of his emotions effectively stand-out plotwise. After 20+ years of established Dragonball lore, It’s easy to forget that Dende after taking Kami’s place has attained some sort of god-status himself since the Cell Saga. True he isn’t on-par with Beerus or the Kai’s, but he clearly understands how fucked everyone is when sensing the “divine” aura of Beerus.

Krillin & Yamacha, were seemingly the only Z fighters that don’t proactively do shit but can you blame them? They’re are just normal humans, It also didn’t help that every other “heavy-hitter” within Goku’s circle was instantly defeated in such an insultingly simple way which puts the episode’s writing to a disadvantage.

Traditionally, DBZ in the past loved to drag out fight scenes because “powering up” usually took longer than the episode itself but it’s clear that DB Super is learning from their mistakes thanks to DBZ: Kai by not dragging them out too long while still enticing its audience enough to keep us hooked.
