Review: Steven Universe “Three Gems and a Baby”

That looks like a baby.

Spoilers Below

During a particularly bad snowstorm, Greg, and the Gems reminisce about the last blizzard they experienced. It was about 14 years ago when Steven was only a few months old. Greg’s friend, Vidalia, let him and baby Steven stay at her house while she was away. While Greg tries to care for a newborn by himself, Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl show up with presents for the baby. Unfortunately, all of their presents were inappropriate. Garnet brought a razor, Amethyst brought adult diapers, and Pearl brought a dictionary.

Suddenly, Steven started to glow, surprising everyone. Greg runs into the other room to get the baby book that Vidalia gave him. He was only gone for a few minutes but the Gems kidnapped baby Steven, stole Greg’s van, and took off. Each of the Gems thought Rose was trapped in Steven in different ways. Pearl thought she was trapped in the gem in Steven’s belly, Amethyst thought she just couldn’t shapeshift back to normal, and Garnet thought Steven and Rose were a fusion that couldn’t be undone. All of them were wrong.

Thankfully, Greg bravely ran through the blizzard after the van until he caught up with them. (They had stopped and turned off the van…and Greg tried to use a dog and a sled to make a dogsled.) Once they were all together again, they realized that Steven is something completely different. Something none of them have ever seen before. And it will take all of them to care for him properly.

We knew that Gems aren’t born as babies and they don’t grow up. They just are. Greg knows about human babies but knows little about the lives of Gems. It’s nice to get these little peeks into their past to see how different they were back then and how much they have learned since. I love when a show’s characters grow as people. They are all so different in so many different ways.
