Review: Star Wars Rebels “The Last Battle”

Will it win the war?

Spoilers Below

While on a mission to check out an old transport ship, Ezra, Kanan, Zeb, Rex, and Chopper come upon some active Clone War battle droids. Believing that the Clone War is still going on, the battle droids capture the Rebels and force them to fight one last battle with them. Since Zeb’s race was not in the Clone War, he will be a hostage while the others will attempt to rescue him. Chopper, who slipped past the battle droids detection, is able to send a distress call. Unfortunately, the Empire gets the message before it can get to Hera. Of course, they send ships to investigate.

The Rebels manage to save Zeb but the droid malfunctions, resulting in the rescue not being marked as a win. Ezra concedes that they would have lost anyway if the droid didn’t malfunction. They don’t have a lot of time to discuss the fact because Imperial ships are coming in. The droids and the Rebels work together to escape.

Returning to Hera, Kanan laments that they weren’t able to retrieve the bombs they found. But they were able to get a new ship to replace the previously destroyed Phantom.

There was a lot going on in this episode and not all of it was good. Once again, Chopper is misused. Instead of trying to save his friends, all he does is send a message and wait around. Remember when Chopper was awesome? I miss that Chopper. And, while I like seeing Rex, I don’t know that we needed to bring back the battle droids again. It may have closed some doors for Rex but it was pretty pointless otherwise. I feel like this season may be lagging without Inquisitors chasing everyone around. The current version of the Empire seems happy just waiting for the Rebels to do something. The Empire should be more proactive than reactive. They have some decent bad guys, they just don’t use them well. I miss the old days of the show.
