Review: Steven Universe “Last One Out Of Beach City”

Greg has agreed to take Amethyst to a rock concert. However, he has to cancel at the last minute. Pearl offers to escort Amethyst with Steven. Surprised, Amethyst agrees.

Pearl decides that she needs to show Amethyst and Steven how much of a badass she is. She puts on some human clothes and pops the collar of her jacket, because that makes it badder. When the group stops to get drinks before the show, Pearl chooses an apple juice. She has a little bit of trouble opening the can but manages to get it eventually. As she downs the juice, a human girl that looks almost exactly like Rose Quartz walks in. Amethyst dares Pearl to talk to her. Despite walking over to the girl, Pearl is too flustered to talk to her.

Back on the road, Steven loudly points out the awkward fact that the girl looked like Rose. Of course, Pearl blushes. Just then, Steven notices the girl, on a motorcycle, in the next lane. Again, Amethyst dares Pearl to talk to the girl. Before any words can be exchanged, Pearl gets stuck at a red light. The group watches the pink haired girl drive away. Pearl decides to not lose the moment and drives through the red light. Unfortunately, a cop nearby cop flashes his lights behind them. Steven tells Pearl to pull over but Pearl doesn’t have a driver’s license. Knowing that she can’t tell the policeman that she’s an alien, Pearl slams her foot down on the gas. The chase ends when Pearl slides the car behind a billboard. But now the car is out of gas.

As the group starts walking toward town, Pearl laments how she tried to do all of these things to make Amethyst think that she was bad but failed at every turn. Amethyst is stunned. Pearl has been a badass the entire evening. Somehow, they hear music nearby and it just happens to be the concert they were planning on attending. And the pink haired girl is there. Pearl decides to go talk to her. Even though the short conversation wasn’t amazing, the girl did give Pearl her phone number. Pearl is a badass, indeed.

Of all of the times that Pearl has tried to impress the others, this was the best. Not only did Pearl do things that usually make her uncomfortable, she also did things just because it would make someone else happy. I mean, I can’t believe that Pearl wanted to go to a rock concert on her own. But she knew that it was important to Amethyst so she volunteered to go with her friend. This episode made me wish we could see what a teenage Pearl was like. If she was anything like what we saw here, she must have been the coolest teenager ever.
