Review: Marvel’s ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN VS. The Sinister 6 “Return to the Spider-Verse – Part 4”
Fortunately, Spider-Gwen is served justice, but is it enough to save the show?
Spoilers Below
Spider-Man and Arachnid Kid head to Mile Morales’ world where they run into Spider-Gwen who is framed for robbing a bank and running for her life. The trio of Spiders get away and head into Gwen’s underground lair with Aunt May playing the role of Oracle. We find out that a piece of the Siege is at the police station governed by Gwen’s father. Miles and Peter get into the station and get the piece of the crystal, but run into Wolf Spider who has Miles’ mom in tow.
We come to find out that Wolf Spider also has a Siege of Perilous…AND HUGE SPIDER ARMS! A fight ensues with a bunch of Spider-dudes going at it with the Wolf Spider going down and the Siege of Perilous being completely rebuilt. Miles and the gang return home, but Wolf Spider returns for another battle and learn that he is, in fact, Peter Parker from another dimension. Wolf Spider knocks out the Spider peeps and takes off with the Siege of Perilous.
We follow Wolf Spider to his cave where he has absorbed the powers of all the different Spider-Men from different dimensions making him twice the size of normal. Both Miles and Gwen are subdued, leaving a battle between two different Peter Parkers. Instead of fighting, Spider-Man gives himself up and leads all of the different Spider-Men to rebel against Wolf Spider and destroy him once and for all. We head back above ground where the Stacies come clean and Miles Morales joins Peter Parker with his mom. Nick Fury and friends try to pull the worst joke.
Our Take
SO many characters when making their debuts in Ultimate Spider-Man have been a letdown. From Doc Ock’s stupid character design, to the general assassination of Agent Venom’s character, the producers of Ultimate Spider-Man know full well how to take a character and just side fuck him/her to oblivion. Fortunately, the same cannot be said for Spider-Gwen.
Voiced by Dove Cameron (Descendants), Spider-Gwen officially debuts and it should be to fan-fare. That said, with the multiple Spider-characters, the multiple web slings become a headache, but I really would love to see a whole show with Spider-Gwen in it. Does the character unabashedly rip off Barbara Gordon in every way? Yes. From the conflict with her dad, to Aunt May assuming the “Oracle” position, it’s all over the place. But, Spider-Gwen is by far the most polished of Spider-Man’s web-slinging friends and it shows.
That said, the battle at the end was clumsily choreographed and filled with plot holes. Those looking for this show to rear it’s ugly head from the doldrums of lame-town are going to be disappointed. But, if you wanna see Spider-Gwen on the small-screen, this is a great first crack.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
