Review: Steven Universe”Crack The Whip”

As Pearl and Garnet are leaving to look for Jasper, Connie arrives for her sword-fighting lesson. Pearl completely forgot. She promises to make it up to Connie and leaves the kids with the rather lazy Amethyst, who didn’t want to go on the mission.

Amethyst tries to get the kids to relax but Connie really wants to train. After Connie and Steven spar for a bit, Amethyst convinces them to go get food. They eat and head out into the ocean to play.

While they are goofing off, one of the corrupted gems that Jasper grabbed leaps out of the ocean. Amethyst dispatches the first beast rather quickly. Then Jasper and the other corrupted gem appear from under the water. Amethyst takes on Jasper, leaving Connie and Steven to handle the monster. Unsure of their fighting abilities, Connie and Steven unknowingly fuse into Stevonnie.

Jasper manages to knock Amethyst out, meaning Stevonnie now has to fight her. Jasper mounts the gem beast and Stevonnie rides Lion. Stevonnie defeats Jasper, driving her back into the sea. Together, Connie and Steven have proven themselves worthy fighters. Only now Amethyst feels that she is no longer needed.

What a weirdly emotional episode. First, we had Connie trying to make up for her perceived failure during “Gem Hunt.” Then, we have Jasper trying to convince Amethyst that they are the same and should be fighting together. Finally, Amethyst feeling so utterly useless knowing that Connie and Steven are able fighters. Not only was this episode interesting on its own, it has also left me needing to know what will happen next. The 100th episode is coming up on Thursday and, so far, it is looking like it might be an amazing episode.
