Review: Elena of Avalor “Spellbound”

Tell me who you are. I am spellbound.

Spoilers Below

Elena dubs Mateo the Royal Wizard. Mateo, however, isn’t sure he is up to the task. Of course, Elena has a song to cheer him on.

Meanwhile, Fiero, an evil wizard known as a malvago, sneaks into the party Elena is throwing for Mateo. Eventually, it comes out that Fiero is searching for The Codex, the spellbook handed down for generations to each Royal Wizard. When Fiero turns (almost) everyone at the party into stone, Mateo has to find the book in order to save them.

In order to find the Codex, Mateo must answer three puzzles. With help from Elena, Naomi, and Gabe, Mateo finds the Codex and makes the necessary potion to fix everyone’s stony problems. Before he can sprinkle the potion on the party goers, Fiero turns both Gabe and Naomi into stone and steals the book. Mateo gives Elena the potion to restore her friends while he chases after Fiero. The young wizard manages to beat the bad guy, leaving them with barely enough time to turn everyone back to normal. Mateo has proven himself worthy of being the Royal Wizard.

As the fifth episode of the series, this was probably the most interesting of the bunch. There was some action, the episode’s song wasn’t too bad, and Mateo got to grow as a character. My only complaint is that the puzzles were a little too easy for an older children’s show. Ah well, can’t win them all, right?
