Review: Adventure Time “Daddy Daughter Card Wars”

We spend time with last night’s Adventure Time!

Spoilers Below

Tonight’s new episode of Adventure Time, “Daddy Daughter Card Wars” was incredible– maybe my favorite so far of this season, after “Beyond the Grotto“. It was a Jake-centric episode with his daughter, and no Finn at all. I love episodes like this.

It will be an unpopular opinion, but one of my least favorite things about AdTi is Finn. And Ice King, and Princess Bubblegum and Marceline, for that matter. So needless to say, I often find Jake episodes awesome and fun.

The premise of “Daddy Daughter Card Wars” is Jake spending time with one of his children– a premise they don’t explore too often, but a great one. We see his daughter more grown up– and the entire episode deals with aging, coming of age and youth.

The two play cards, and Jake introduces her to a card game of his youth– something similar to Magic the Gathering, Pokémon or Dungeons and Dragons. The sequence that shows a young Jake with more hair and a denim jacket LOSING IT over a game of the cards is HILARIOUS– like, laugh out loud funny. I had to re-watch it and laugh again. Probably the funniest thing in this season so far.

At the end of the episode, Jake and his daughter both come to terms with their place in life, and the aging cycle– heck, your thirties are dignified, and your forties are just something that’s going to freak us out. Seriously, a great episode of AdTi this week– we even get to see one of Jake’s exes.
