Comics Review: Rick and Morty Lil’ Poopy Superstar#1

This was just poop.

When you think of a spin-off, the successful ones last a while because there’s a BUNCH of stories to be told. Bart Simpsons Comics, Daria, and the Arrowverse come to mind as successful shows or franchises spun-off from another franchise that is HUGE! Yes, Rick and Morty is the biggest animated series on Adult Swim, as it should be, but if you’re going to spin-off a comic book inspired by a character that’s only appeared in like two episodes, you better have some gusto.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s really on display in the first issue of Rick and Morty Lil’ Poopy Superstar#1. First of all, I hate the title of the comic, and included in the first issue is actually a SPLIT issue with a story involving Summer and Poopy grabbing Rick’s portal gun and heading off to another planet. Then there’s another strip that is reminiscent of the stuff we already get with Rick and Morty Comics, just on a MUCH smaller scale. The latter story is actually funnier than what was supposed to be the titular character’s high awaited debut. Instead what we get is a setup that really reminds me of every other Rick and Morty comic series, just without Rick and/or Morty. Yea, it’s a nice change of pace to get Summer really involved, but normally for $4, I get a full issue of Rick and Morty Comics, not just a split. I will say the illustrations by Sarah Graley are excellent for the first half of the issue, but overall the execution of this spin-off is great…for me to poop on.
