Review: Adventure Time “Lady Rainicorn of the Crystal Dimension” (S7Ep30)

The new Adventure Time episode, “Lady Rainicorn of the Crystal Dimension” was surprisingly pretty good. A Finn and Jake-free episode, the story line revolved around Lady Rainicorn, her son TV, and her ex boyfriend, Lee.

The episode starts with Lady’s (and Jake’s) son TV still in bed at noon, asking for money. Lady goes to get him food, and he eats a strange crystal sandwich he finds in a drawer. When going to try to sell the “vintage” looking box at the market, Lee shows up, and ends up taking TV back to the crystal dimension from where Lady Rainicorn hails.

TV thinks Lee is his new best friend, but Lee has more sinister plans. We get to see a lot about Lady Rainicorn’s past in this episode, why she came to Ooo, and how– she has a lot of powers that we don’t see her use too often (hopping dimensions, for one). We also get to see Rainicorn’s parents, who use the Japanese-to-English translation boxes on their necks.

In a show for kids, there is a lot of reading of subtitles in Rainicorn-heavy episodes. This could be a downside for kids who don’t know how to read too well yet. There are also a lot of mature themes- Rainicorn’s ex is basically a terrorist who hates dogs for some reason. Overall, this episode was pretty interesting, it went fast and didn’t drag– and there were some funny spots too, I found myself laughing out loud a couple times. The art of the crystal dimension was well done too.
