Review: Adventure Time “I Am a Sword” (S7Ep31)

On this weeks new AdTi we see Finn lose his trusty Finn Sword after doing some careless “sword tricks” on a bridge. This particular sword is special because it was made from a dream world duplicate of Finn. It contains a separate Finn personality in the hilt that we discover can talk.

After losing the sword, Finn begins to have guilt dreams about what the sword was doing without him as if the two are psychically linked. He also begins to have an existential crisis about what he takes for granted. He realizes how important the sword is to him and how they are so connected. This episode comes to us the week of Earth Day, and perhaps it is commentary on how we are all connected to the environment, and many of us take it for granted.

Eventually Finn and Jake find out Bandit Princess (voiced by Amy Sedaris) has taken the sword and is using it to steal and rob banks, such as the one in Spiky Village. The two realize they need to track her down to stop her spree of theft and violence.

In the episode, there are some cool moments, when Jake still acts as a big brother to Finn (hiding from him what happens when a chicken head is cut off) and standing back to let Finn fight his own battles. This episode is iconic of the things most AdTi lovers have come to enjoy: brotherhood, chivalry, and friendship.
