Reddit AMA Recap: Chris Parnell talks “Archer” and “Rick and Morty”

Like Aisha Tyler recently, Chris Parnell stopped by Reddit to do an AMA where he talked up a little bit about his role as ‘Cyril’ on Archer and Jerry on ‘Rick and Morty’. He didn’t stay THAT long, but he offered up some good tidbits.

On voice actors being able to contribute to their scripts

 We don’t contribute much at all to the writing generally. We have the freedom to try things if inspiration strikes, but the writing is so good on both shows that it’s hard to improve on. We mostly interact at conventions and other Archer related activities, but we’ve been talking about getting together for an orgy for a long time.

On how he learned Spanish for “El Contador”

Hey, thanks about that episode! I think that’s my favorite one too. I just learned it for the episode. I’m trying, very slowly, to learn some Spanish with an app on my iPad.

On the differences between working on Archer and Rick and Morty

 

Well, the scripts are wildly different, obviously, so that’s the big difference. The actual working process is slightly different, because Justin (Roiland) is usually sitting in the control room directing me in the booth, where as with Archer, it’s usually Matt Thompson, Casey Willis, and Eric Sims on the other end of the phone line talking to me and directing me from Atlanta.

On how Chris got into voice-acting

I have been voice acting since I was a kid, although I’ve only done animation for the last 15 years or so I guess. (I’m counting some TV Funhouse stuff I did on SNL.) The great thing about VO is that you can work on many different shows at once. On-camera stuff is a bit more limiting, but I love to do it when folks will let me!
