Review: Adventure Time “Blank-Eyed Girl” (S7Ep19)

adventuretime

I was left relatively speechless after the ending of tonight’s new episode of Adventure Time, “Blank-Eyed Girl”, and I’m still not sure what to think.

The episode starts off with Finn and Jake in a diner, listening to a conspiracy theory show on the radio. The show describes an actual urban legend, the ‘blank-eyed child’ of myth and from horror movies. Jake, of course, finds the claims to be “baloney”, even though Finn points out that after everything they’ve seen, maybe they shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss strange phenomena.

On the way back to their house there is definitely a laugh or two when Jake tricks Finn in the woods, and even later, when the two arrive home and have to deal with what they believe to be blank-eyed girls inside their home. After looking over books and consulting the radio host Starchy, the two find that the true explanation behind the blank-eyed girls is much stranger and unexplainable than they could have even imagined.

I was struck by how insanely weird the components of this episode were– they definitely drew upon the familiar horror story/urban legend but added a crazy twist at the end. The open-ended conclusion where nothing is really explained struck me as both weird for the sake of weird, which the show does often, but also something that might make kids think a little about all the strange things in the world out there.

After all, a little imagination goes a long way.
