Ultimate Guitar recently conducted an interview with one half of Tenacious D aka Kyle Gass. During the course of the story, Kyle talked up the Tenacious D animated series that has long been in development. Surprisingly, this thing doesn’t sound completely dead, but from the sounds of it, it’s still a long way off:
UG: Is there a target date for the next D album? Have you been in the studio yet or is it still in the writing stages? KG: We’ve just been writing a little bit. So I’d say we’re nowhere near recording but… I don’t know if I’m allowed to say… but I’m just going to say it anyways. We’re working on an animated series. That’s all I can say. And we’ve made some music for that. But you didn’t hear that from me. UG: Is this something for HBO or for the Internet? KG: Does it matter? UG: I want to know where to keep my peepers out for it. KG: Everything is everywhere nowadays anyway. It will be on a flat screen near you. We should have done an exclusive release where people can only watch it on their smartphone.
Originally, a Tenacious D animated series was supposed to happen on Yahoo, but from the sounds of it Yahoo’s getting ready for a buy, so I doubt that comes to fruition. In any case, I fucking love Tenacious D and I hope this thing happens. Recently the band was featured in a bunch of animated shorts for IFC, but I doubt the animated series would be on that network due to the fact that they have no interest in jumping back into the format since Out There got cancelled.
