BUBBLE CAN Review: Night Sweats “SWEATx”

Night Sweats is a staple of Adult Swim Canada on Friday nights. A compilation of animated shorts gives you tastes of a lot of things. There will certainly be something for you. How was this week’s episode? Read on to find out!

The first short “Crack Duck” follows a duck with the same name as the title. It’s sort of a tragic short, where the humor derives from the suffering of this sad duck. He’s lonely and botches his own suicide, which isn’t really a suicide, but more of a exit from existence itself. He ends up becoming one with everything in the universe. It’s metaphysical, sad, but there is still a thin line of comedy threading it all together. It’s an interesting short, and sort of a refresher from the usual stuff they’ve shown us so far.

The second short “Archaeologist” will remind you of “World Doctors” at first glance, because it is. Using a classic bait and switch, we were tricked into another World Doctors adventure. It was a pretty clever way to introduce the short. This World Doctors has been my favorite thus far. In comparison to the other episodes in the series, this one was much more reserved. It wasn’t moving at a fast pace, so it was a bit more digestible.

We then had a new “Art Corner Tutorial”. This week we learned how to make a wedding invitation. It includes large red font, pictures of your exes, and a buffet. It was a nice quick laugh, not my favorite art tutorial so far, but it was harmless.

The third short was “Executioner & Friend”. The Executioner needs some assistance and decides to get a slime. A slime is a creature that comes in many varieties. Too impatient to have the paperwork processed, the Executioner picks any old slime. It turns out to be a stupid slime. Bonded for life, the Executioner names him “Friend”. Friend may be stupid, but he turns out to be exactly what the Executioner needed. This short was kind of slow. It took awhile to get going, but when it did, there was some action and funny dialogue. Not a bad watch overall.

The last short was another “Don’t Feed the Humans”. This short sometimes doesn’t work for me because there is a very limited amount of time, and there are a lot of characters. The better installments have been ones that focus on a few characters. This week used a lot of characters, but it served the story that they were trying to tell. The aliens who have confined the humans to this zoo want them to mate, and the alien’s research on human mating lead them to an orgy porn video, so they concluded that humans mate as such. There were a lot of great interactions in this short. It was a short simple story, and it didn’t spread the spotlight to too many characters.

Overall, this was a great episode. We got to see some new stuff, some old stuff that was disguised as new stuff, and some old stuff. The live action segments were literally filler, so it was sort of a meta idea to fill up time. Another good installment of Night Sweats.
