Review: The Stanley Dynamic “The Stanley Houseguest”

6bQA5DCd_400x400Last night was pretty hectic between the federal election in Canada and a new Star Wars trailer. But in all of that business, the Stanley Dynamic also swung in with a brand new episode! So how was it? Read on to find out!

In “The Stanley Houseguest” mom invites a homeless Doop to stay with the family, meanwhile Larry and Summer feud over who gets to keep a long board being given away at a lost and found giveaway.

To start, I think this episode fell a little short of what the rest of the season has brought us. The show tends to go a little off the rails at times and it’s quite enjoyable. It sort of feels like watching a live action cartoon. Exaggerated actions and reactions can be quite fun, especially for younger viewers, but I think Doop’s story went a little far into the fantastical. Things started off well, but towards the end of the second act, things just got strange and made little sense. Doop’s antics went well beyond what would be acceptable for any family, and what started off as a funny story, fell apart.

Larry’s story with Summer was pretty entertaining. I think Larry and the newcomer, Summer, have great rivalry to watch. You can sense the respect between the two, but the competitive nature of both keeps them from really becoming good friends. This story gave the same sort of vibes as last week’s episode, so I would have preferred a little spin on what defines their relationship, but overall this story was really good.

Luke was missed in this episode. He popped in for a few minutes, but his moments got lost in the shuffle. As of late, I feel his character is falling further and further into the background and that’s disappointing because he is such a fun character. Of course, the entire show doesn’t need to revolve around him, but since the return I would have liked to see more of the show’s defining twist. We see different characters establishing different relationships, but I feel Luke is sort of at square one in comparison to the rest of the family. I’d like to see him further some friendships or possibly make some new friends.

Overall, this was a fine episode. It’s the same comedy you would come to expect from the show, but I think this felt like more of what we had last week, it also went a little overboard. There were still a lot of fun moments, and if you’ve liked the show up till this point, I don’t see why wouldn’t like this either.
