Review: The Muppets – “Pig Out”

Miss Piggy finds out that the crew goes out for drinks after the show. She is offended that no one invites her, even though she wouldn’t actually go. Selfishly, she gets Kermit to ask the crew to invite her, under the premise that she would not go. When Pepe the Prawn invites her to Rowlf’s Tavern, she begins to turn down the offer but ends up accepting anyway. Everyone expects her to ruin their good time.

Once again, Fozzy has the side story. As he is performing the pre-show warm-up for Up Late, he accidentally hits Statler in the face with a t-shirt shot from a canon. Fozzy spends the rest of the episode trying to be nice to the cranky old man. He buys all the items Statler requests while hospitalized. Statler gets discharged before Fozzy returns, leaving a ‘SUCKER!’ sign in his bed for the bear. Yeah, it’s really boring and nothing is resolved. Fozzy keeps expecting the old men to be nice and they continue to be cranky old codgers. Boring!

The rest of the cast heads off to the Tavern with Piggy. She spends all of the time talking about herself and her lavish lifestyle, which bores everyone. Until Ed Helms shows up. Piggy invites him to join the gathering and the party cranks up to level 11. The gang spends the rest of the night drinking and singing karaoke with Ed. There is some pretty epic singing in the karaoke montage. Swedish Chef’s version of “Rapper’s Delight” is amazing. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker perform the Sonny and Cher duet, “I Got You, Babe.” Ed sings “Don’t Stop Believing” with everyone. It is probably the best karaoke montage television has ever seen.

When Kermit arrives at work the next morning, no one is at the office. Piggy had told everyone that they could come in whenever they wanted, just like her. Angry, Kermit has his assistant, Yolanda, call everyone into the office ASAP. At the not-quite-morning meeting, everyone is hungover and very little work is actually accomplished. Piggy arrives shortly after the meeting begins to tell everyone that they are invited to a party at Usher’s after the show. Unable to deal with a staff incapable of working, Kermit has a talk with Piggy in her dressing room. Knowing that Piggy loves to have her ego stroked, he gives her a big flowery speech about how she is an idol that should be admired from afar instead of hanging out with the little people. Piggy agrees and tells everyone that they can’t come to Usher’s party but she will have fun without them. And things are right in Kermit’s world, once again.

Hands down, this is the best episode of the show so far. There were so many amazing moments that I completely forgave the entire Fozzy Bear sidestory. Swedish Chef absolutely obliterated every scene he was in. The show has made Bunsen and Beaker a canon couple. Sam’s unrequited crush on Janice was strange but weirdly appropriate. Even Piggy’s attempt to be normal worked. I know not every episode can be this one. That would get boring quickly. But I am glad that there has finally been one super bright star to keep the audience interested. Now we just need to figure out how to get Fozzy out of the picture. I think Rizzo and Gonzo deserve some side stories of their own. Their antics need to be seen.
