Review: Moonbeam City “Lasers & Liars”

Spoilers Below

Despite the fact that he was told not to go there, Dazzle heads to a gala where he runs into Pizzaz’s older sister Panache. We come to find out that Pizzaz is an heir to a huge laser mining fortune, and with her father readying for cryostasis, the Miller sisters are all arguing over whomever gets the massive fortune being left behind. We’re introduced to a few more of Pizzaz’s sisters and their rather subservient husbands.

A fight breaks out among all of the sisters, and really the only one that gets hurt is the father, but before his last breath he leaves his fortune to Pizzaz…rare blues records. Panache takes the records and jettisons, but Pizzaz is given a necklace that when thrown acts like a grenade. Despite Panache’s impressive-looking yacht, it’s no match for Pizzaz’s new power.

Through this whole ordeal, Rad has been dancing like a monkey on a hot plate trying to impress these rich schlubs with money he doesn’t have, yachts he doesn’t own, and blues records he knows nothing about. He ends up burning down someone else’s yacht, and is kicked into the water for clearly being a loser.

Our Take

I saw quite a few clips of this episode leading up to it, and to be honest I was really let down by the sisters’ brawl, because I thought that was going to be a lot of fun. One sister was on steroids and another had a blade for an arm, but no one really threw down. Kate McKinnon was outstanding as Panache, but I got a bigger kick out of all of the husbands. Why? Because guys like that actually exist. They get married and lose their spine.

Rad’s bit was kind of lame, and while it kind of helped lay groundwork for the end of Dazzle/Pizzaz’s ordeal, I kind of thought the overall execution was lacking. Probably the weakest episode of the year up to this point. Also, you may have heard a reference to “Cop Con”, well that’s next week’s episode, so now you’ll get to see what it’s all about.
