Review: Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors “Attack of the Synthezoids”

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN

Spoilers Below

Spider-Man wakes up and is accused of having hallucinations of Arnim Zola’s synths attacking him. Eventually, those synths come in the form of Nick Fury and his former classmates with Zola claiming that he has taken over Triskelion. Thankfully, Amadeus and Iron Fist are still legit, and a big battle between the three and the synth SHIELD classmates ensues. The battle ends with both Amadeus and Iron Fist getting captured, but we find Rhino, Agent Venom, and a couple of the other class mates. They find Zola’s lab which is now producing synths at an exponential rate. Tiger actually turns out to be a synth, leaving the remaining good guys outmatched. Cloak saves the rest of the guys, but begin growing suspicious of each other and are constantly wondering who is a synth and who is not. Dagger gets taken away, but by the time Cloak, Spidey, and the rest finish fighting the synths, Cloak is too weak to just teleport them to her location. Arnim Zola springs a trap, and blows the heroes to kingdom come.

Our Take

After a long break of no Ultimate Spider-Man, we’re thrown right back in the thick of things, and with it comes all the reasons why this show is held back. Agent Venom is still a piece of shit shell of his comic self, the Rhino is kind of OK, but you could literally replace him with the Hulk and get the same results. Tiger is kind of depressing, and Dagger has no chance of making it as a superhero in this universe.

But, the premise of the first fall episode is actually rather unique, and offered itself some nice twists and turns. Zola is a terrifyingly adequate villain for Spider-Man, and while Spidey’s supporting cast leaves a lot to be desired, this is a battle I want to see more of.
