Comic review: Bravest Warriors #35

BravestWarriors_035_A_Main

When we left our Warriors, they were being eaten by a Matter Shark. This can’t possibly spell the end for them, can it? Of course not, there’s still two issues left!

Once the Warrior ship was swallowed, the gang found that all of the swallowed planets were just floating around the shark’s stomach. None of them had been digested. All of the planets seem perfectly fine. Except one. Catbug’s home planet. Fortunately, Catbug has a plan to save everyone. But it means going down to the planet to see his dad.

The gang, decked out in spacesuits, land on the planet and head toward the castle. However, they are stopped by Jarod, a rather large cat-type creature. (Everyone else pretty much looks like Catbug. Jarod does not.) Jarod tells Catbug that they follow Bugcat since he abandoned his title. So they arrest everyone.

Inside the castle, Catbug faces off with his brother, Bugcat. At least until their father wakes up. That is when Catbug finally comes clean with his plan. Apparently, his people can create small portals. If they all work together, they can create a large portal. Then the Warrior’s ship can push them out of the shark. Moceloth, Catbug’s father, sort of releases the imprisoned Warriors. He takes off their handcuffs but still locks them in jail. That is where the gang finds out that Plum knew more about Catbug’s family than she ever let on.

At that moment, Catbug flies into the jail to introduce the Warriors to his family.

This side story in this issue is titled “The Beast Within.” A farmer has called the Bravest Warriors to help his village. A giant monster has been terrorizing them. Just then, the monster lunges out of the ground and chomps on the Warriors. The Warriors are swallowed and end up in Stomach City, which is populated by furry green bacteria-type people. The stomach people attack the Warriors in an attempt to eat them. In a last ditch attempt to win the battle, Chris throws a radish at one of the guys. The guy bites into the radish, changing everything. Learning how delicious plants are, the stomach people decide to become plant-itarians.

The monster spits out the Warriors and they tell the farmer that they have made peace with the monster. Unfortunately, this new peace means that the monster is now eating all of their crops instead of them!

This is a difficult issue. It is yet another issue of nothing but exposition. All of the drama with Catbug and his family feels forced. There hasn’t been any sort of explanation about why he hates his family or why he turned his back on his people. That whole time in the spaceship before the gang went to the planet would have been a perfect time to throw in a few lines explaining everything. Instead, a good portion of the issue was spent on Catbug being a little passive-aggressive with everyone around him. The final page of the comic tells us that “The end is nigh!” Will this ever be resolved?
