Review: Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors ”Ant-Man”
Spoilers Below
Ant-Man’s giving a guest lecture when we hear Doc Ock has broken free from his cell and has managed to take control of Nick Fury using Doc’s nano-bots that are now crawling inside of the S.H.I.E.L.D. director.
Nova sets out with a small team in an effort to track down and secure Doc Ock. Spider-Man, Ant-Man, and a couple of the others stick around to take on Fury. It isn’t long, but the team knocks out Nick Fury and hatch a plan to get inside of Nick Fury. Turns out Amadeus has all the tools to do just that including shrinking a big ship the Iron Spidey has built so that it’s small enough for Spider-Man, Ant-Man, and Luke Cage to get inside. Because of the invasion, Fury’s white blood cells see the ship and its inhabitants as an infection and make a play to destroy them.
We eventually find the nano-bots in Fury’s body and a huge chase-battle sequence ensues, but there’s too many of them. To help, Iron Fist calms Fury’s heart down which makes it bearable enough for Spider-Man and Ant-Man to do battle. The bots capture Ant-Man and take off leaving Luke and Spidey to get in Fury’s heart valve that leads directly to the brain. We get to the brain and see the brain bot which leaves Doc Ock to send a bunch more bots after the duo. Luke heads off to fight the bots giving Spider-Man time to jack into Fury’s brain stem where he finds out that there’s a bomb in the ship’s reactor.
Spidey talks to Fury’s mind and is now able to control his movements. Spidey decides to use his new toy to make his way over to the reactor so as to deactivate the bomb. While all this is going on, Luke Cage is battling a bunch of robots, but Ant-Man comes back and helps make the battle even…until a Mega Bot shows up! The duo make quick work and rejoin with Spidey to make a quick exit out of Nick Fury’s body all the while removing the brain bots. Nick burps, and now everyone’s free. Nova and his team capture Doc Ock while Nick Fury rests up.
Our Take
Doc Ock’s shit character design not-withstanding, this week’s episode of Web Warriors was actually a lot of fun. Let’s put it this way, if you’re a big fan of Matrix: Revolutions you’re gonna love this episode because the scene featuring the robots battling the Ant-ship was clearly inspired by Naomi’s ship travels through the tunnels whilst fighting off the squids. The 3D action scenes were fun and well-directed, and the timely addition of Ant-Man to the team didn’t feel forced.
As mentioned, I still can’t stand some of the character designs of the series. Rhino looks like a blob, and Doc Ock looks like a Nine Inch Nails reject. Amadeus is a rather generic and cliched character as well, but overall tonight’s episode of Web Warriors could have been a lot worse.
Score
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
