Spoilers Below

BLOOD MOON BALL

Star accepts her ex-boyfriend Tom’s invitation to the Blood Moon Ball in the Underworld which happens every 667 years. Problem is, Tom’s temper can flare up from time to time, so much so that he has a life coach to help him get through the icky parts.

Marco is suspicious of Tom’s intentions and crashes the ball to prevent Star from getting her heart broken again. When he reveals himself, a fight ensues which causes Star to freeze her ex. Later, Star tells Marco that he needs to trust her, so they decide to build that trust over nachos.

Our Take

I hate dances, but I love nachos, so this evening ended exactly the way I would kick it off. That said, this week’s episode was very comical but the ending was rather cliche. Actually the whole dance theme has been done a bunch before, but what’s great about this show is the spooky background designs, the rather impressive character designs, and gags galore. The series isn’t serious, but it isn’t trying to be, and that makes for good show.

FORTUNE COOKIES

Ludo and his minions are just no match for Star and Marco and end up leaving a battle at the brutal hands of defeat.

To celebrate, Marco and Star head to a Chinese restaurant where Marco convinces Star that fortune cookies contain magical prophecies. The conviction is so strong, that Star bases all of her life decisions on what is said inside of fortune cookies.

Meanwhile, Ludo holds an audition where he gains a creature called Toffee to shape up the monsters. Right away, Toffee proves to be a strong ally as he comes up with a plan to take advantage of Star’s fortune cookie habit. Unfortunately, Ludo’s monsters succumb to Star’s hugs and one of them comes clean about the plan to Star who sheds her fortune cookie beliefs and battles Ludo and his monsters back to wherever they came from. However, Toffee is still very much in play, and it won’t be the last we see of him.

Our Take

Michael C. Hall was outstanding as Toffee, a character that certainly exudes a more Satanic persona than the other villains of the series. Toffee doesn’t come off as silly or out of control like Ludo is, instead Toffee looks like he is playing chess and he just lost a pawn.

Star and Marco couldn’t be any more oblivious to this as they enjoy, what I gather are, delicious fortune cookies. Here’s a fortune for you, ”This will not be the last time we see Toffee”. The next time around I hope we get more back story for the new character. Where did he come from? Why does he want in on Star? Lots of things to tinker about.
