Review: Yona of the Dawn “Chain of Courage”

Yona of the Dawn has taken a somewhat disappointing turn in the last couple of weeks. The main story is pretty good, with Yona and Yun going undercover to break a human trafficking ring run by Kum-Ji, the lord of Awa. The pirate aren’t able to attack the ship while it’s docked, because innocents will get injured. However, what we did get was a critical failure with Hak…again.

Herein lies the problem. If you’re going to just drop a romantic interest on a character like Hak, it needs to feel organic. It started a couple weeks ago, when Jae-ha went inception on Hak, and implanted the notion. Hak even mentioned it during a monologue last week. We get another uncomfortable moment when Hak corners Yona against the wall, acting like a lunatic. This doesn’t really work for me, because I wasn’t sure if we were getting a rape scene, or Hak was going to profess his feelings again. None of this feels organic at all, and was forced.

As bad as that middle section was, things ramped up again, seemingly heralding the conflict that will bring this season to a close. I mean, after this week, we have four episodes left. So, if there is something different that will bring the season to a close, it’d have to happen soon. Oh, and where’s the final Dragon Warrior? He’s in the opening credits, yet he isn’t anywhere to be seen in the season. Well, at least there’s four episodes to go.
