English Dub Review: Yona of the Dawn “Pirate of Awa”

I was expecting something a lot different from the Green Dragon. Since both Ki-Jah and Shin-Ah were both mostly serious, I was expecting The Green Dragon to be the same. And what’s better is that we got his name, and it’s Jae-Ha. What makes this funny, is that Jae-Ha, like I said before, is the complete antithesis to Ki-Jah and Shin-Ah. He is going to make a great foil for the team, especially since he gets along rather well with Hak. So you know Ki-Jah is going to get pissed just a little more often.

I’m loving how Hak just happened to come across Jae-Ha by total happenstance. Jae-Ha wants nothing to do with Ki-Jah and and Shin-Ah, so whenever his “dragon sense” kicks in, he bolts. Even yet, he bolted because he felt the presence of Yona. So, getting him to actually join the group is going to be a little hard to do.

Unfortunately, “Pirate of Awa” seems like a bit of a circle jerk. There’s a lot of cat and mouse with Yona and her crew and Jae-Ha. It would have been nice to see some sort of confrontation with the proper group, but I guess that will be saved for next week. There was a scene with Jae-Ha’s pirate crew taking down an Awa’s officer ship full of drugs that solidified their more heroic nature. It was nice to see that we didn’t have to rely on just words. What makes it even better is that the crew didn’t really resemble what pirates in other shows like One Piece. However, it ends with Jae-Ha talking to his captain about recruiting Hak.

What we have here is a mixed bag. There is so much I wanted to like. The interaction with Jae-Ha and Hak, and the possibility of Jae-Ha joining right away was too good to happen, I guess. This just made “Pirate of Awa” seem like a total circle jerk with no great resolution. Oh well, I guess there’s always next week.
