Review: Tokyo Ghoul √A “Deluge of Flowers”

I have been waiting for a long time to get some sort of payoff from Tokyo Ghoul √A. For weeks, it seems like nothing was going on at all. There were just episodes just putting people in situations where they don’t really do anything. While “Deluge of Flowers” was definitely enjoyable, it still suffers from the normal Tokyo Ghoul “overly elaborate chess moves to nowhere” scenario that the writers should be famous for.

With that said, the blood flowed like buckets this week. I could give you a list of people who died, but for the sake of time, let’s talk about some of the people who didn’t die. For example, we have Kaneki, who went to war with Amon, with Kaneki barely making it out alive. Kaneki really did something for a change, and I think it was for the good of the people. I’m still lost as to what brought this turn, because he goes from eating people to unlock the Kakuya power, now he’s there saving the world. I am sure hoping that this is explained next week.

As bad as Kaneki got his ass kicked, at least he won. Juuzou got his ass handed to him. For the first time, he was helpless, and I think that did more for his character than what could have been done if he wrecked the one-eyed Owl. It showed that Juuzou isn’t invincible, and showed more tenacity than what even Kaneki can do. The dude could barely walk, and he’s trying to punch the Owl. Kaneki could barely win against Amon, and he has to will himself to Anteiku.

From a writing standpoint, “Deluge of Flowers” was pretty piss poor. People were in places they didn’t need to be, fighting battles that were pretty silly. Kaneki didn’t need to fight Amon, nor did Juzzou need to fight the Owl. For some reason, they were. Both Amon and Kaneki said they didn’t want to fight each other, so why did they? Oh, and how did Ayato go from leading the Aogiri army, to standing on a rooftop staring at Touka? The big “however” here is that the fighting made for entertaining television, even if the reasons behind it were pretty shitty. I’ve come to the conclusion that no one actually watches Tokyo Ghoul √A for the plot. That said, Tokyo Ghoul √A‘s mercy ending is next week. I pray to the Owl that it doesn’t come back for a while.

Error happened.
