English Dub Review: Assassination Classroom “L and R Time”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

“L and R Time” seems to extend the trend of recent Assassination Classroom. What bugs me is that each episode can essentially be split into two episodes, with full-lengths of 23 minutes apiece. The first half expanded on Professor Jelavich, and her trainer, Lovro. In a cliched move, Lovro wants to take over for Jelavich, because he thinks that she’s not able to kill Koro-Sensei. That’s when Koro-Sensei devises a plan to see if Jelavich is as bad as Lovro says she is, and that involves a mock assassination attempt on Karasuma.

The second half tells the story of how Koro-Sensei. Karma, and Nagisa took a trip to Hawaii to catch a movie in Hawaii. There isn’t much to this, except for the very end, which seems to lay plans for the episodes to follow. The last 30 or so seconds was about a kid with white/platinum blonde hair and his guardian who looked like a fucking Meta Knight. It looks like ANOTHER new student is joining 3-E. For a super secretive class based on assassinating a monster, there’s a lot of people who know what the hell is going on in 3-E.

The two stories in “L and R Time” were fun to watch, but I was left disappointed at two failed opportunities to make even greater plots, especially with Jelavich and her master instructor. This could have been a really fun story of disaster after the disaster from both student and teacher, leading into the finale that was in the show. Or, we could have had Koro-Sensei giving a cultural lesson on Hawaii while they were coasting around Hawaii waiting to see the movie. “L and R Time” was a waste of an episode if you were expecting something with balls, like most of the rest of the season. However, if you’re looking for something to kill time with, you’ve come to the right place.
