Comics Review: Rick and Morty #1
Spoilers Below
The Rick and Morty TV show has a voice and soul that is really difficult to duplicate. That said, I told everyone back in October of last year that this show needed a comic book because the one that came with the Blu-Ray was awesome. Creator Justin Roiland has a comics background, so obviously, there’s good DNA here to turn Adult Swim’s biggest franchise into a print deal.
As expected, Rick and Morty #1 provides a near flawless Rick and Morty adaptation that offers fans of the franchise a very worthy option until the show premieres its second season this Summer on Adult Swim. Obviously, there are some obvious deficiencies with being in print. For starters, you can’t appreciate the stellar background designs that the show is known for nor do the character designs seem as inventive. Moreover, fans of Jerry may be a tad disappointed this issue as unlike in the series he really doesn’t go off on his own tangent, but he’s still pretty funny. I also like the idea of a shorts series featuring Summer as the show REALLY didn’t warm up to her until the latter half of the season. This comic could make her a fan favorite earlier.
All in all, Rick and Morty does as good a job as any comics series that is spun-off from an animated series. It expands the brand without pandering and offers a great alternative to just watching reruns of your favorite cartoons. Rick and Morty #1 is a worthy methadone until you get your heroin fix by way of Rick & Morty season 2.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
