Review: Tokyo Ghoul √A “Deeper Layers”

Do you know what made “Deeper Layers” leagues ahead of what has been out so far from Tokyo Ghoul √A? There was actual, tangible action! There were characters doing things! There was none of the touchy feely mess that has been going on. This was pure, unadulterated mayhem, and I loved it. I think I finally figured out why most of my friends have a hard on for this show.

That being said, Juuzou Suzuya is easily my favorite character. He has the childish glee when he kills Ghouls from Aogiri, like a kid has when he gets a toy he’s been wanting. Suzuya carries a giant fucking scythe that is nothing like I’ve seen before. I can easily watch a show of just this kid slicing through Ghouls, and be perfectly content. In fact, someone in Japan should pitch this story, because I’m sure that it could get funded on Kickstarter in a few days.

Speaking of childish glee, was I the only one who was so happy to see Kaneki get his ass handed to him by Shachi? Kaneki does absolutely nothing for me as the main focus of Tokyo Ghoul. This is exactly what Naruto would be like if that show was fronted by Sasuke. It would be one of the most boring shows I could watch. Kaneki has the personality of a pile of crap, with no charisma whatsoever. Even Ayato would be a more solid choice. It’s like writers have a competition on who can have the moodiest, most androgynous characters ever, and whoever wins, gets the main character. This is bullshit, if you ask me. Give him a sadistic streak, then we can talk.

“Deeper Layers” actually shows that Tokyo Ghoul can be an enjoyable show. The problem is, Tokyo Ghoul has a lot of extraneous exposition. We got a full episode of what Touka was doing last episode, but “Deeper Layers” brings the blood. If we can get more of this every week, I would be a happy man. The only thing I can tell you guys right now is that this feels like “Bleach Disappointment” is going to come back if full force with Tokyo Ghoul.
