Review: Tokyo Ghoul √A “Rift”

TG ep 5

Well, it looks like Tokyo Ghoul √A may have came around to something I can enjoy. Well, that would have been completely true, if it weren’t for the terrible censor job “Rift” had. In fact, I noticed it when I screencapped this so I can have a picture for tonight. Look at the bottom right corner of the picture. Kurona gets fucked up by Juuzou Suzuya and his knife party. Of all of the things I’ve seen so far in my history of watching anime, that was the last thing I would expect to be censored. I would expect the girls in Yurikuma Arashi to be censored after their navel flower licking escapades. This was fucking bullshit.

Now that I have that out of my system, we can get on with the rest of the episode. Thank Jeebus himself that the flashbacks were at a minimum. This was all fighting again, and even Kaneki came to a real impass in his arc. And no, I’m not talking about him becoming a god damn centipede Ghoul thing either. This was a really cool transformation, because Kaneki actually showed something besides a silly lack of emotions.

The action was all over place. The fight with Juuzou Suzuya was great. For a human (maybe?), he utterly owned the twins. I don’t say owned often, but this was magnificent. For only having the scythe for about an hour, Suzuya owned it. Watching him work that scythe was kind of like watching Bruce Lee work his nunchuku, except nowhere near as cool. Like I said last week, he’s easily my favorite character.

“Deeper Layers” and “Rift” are an entertaining two episodes. The first time in Tokyo Ghoul √A  since the first episode that characters let the blood fly, and it was great. The stories are finally getting somewhere I can understand, except for the Owl. This guy is still a little out there for me, seeing as though I still have trouble getting through Tokyo Ghoul proper. I know he leads Aogiri, but that’s about it. Tokyo Ghoul √A is definitely getting better, and I can almost see why people like it. Maybe when we get the aftermath next week, the show can keep the rhythm going that started here.
