Review: Tokyo Ghoul √A “Dancing Flowers”

Well, it looks like we’re getting a start onto season two, and episode late.

I am not sure what to make of Tokyo Ghoul √A. I’ve been sitting here, trying to figure out what makes Tokyo Ghoul √A garner such a fanatical fan base, but I’m stuck here derping my face off.  Generally, I can pick up on these reasons relatively quick, yet I’m here wondering if there is anything else on that can possibly gain my interest.

That may sound a little harsh, but after a really terrible way to start the season in “New Surge,”  Dancing Flowers doesn’t do much of anything to either elaborate on “New Surge,” or feel like things were really going forward. The problem is that it’s like all of the destruction from “New Surge” never happened, and the only carryover was Kaneki sticking with the Aogiri.

Above all else, “Dancing Flowers” felt like the cleanup episode from what could have been a finale. The way that the episodes fell is what makes things really confusing, because everything is a step behind. However, the only part of I can actually wrap my head around was when Kaneki is on screen. The way he is now is a stark contrast from how he was in the first series. He found a way to get stronger, and that is just eating every humanoid in his sight. The group at Anteiku finally move on and reopen, possibly coming to the conclusion that their current group is as large as it’s going to get.

Speaking of the humans, it seems that they are in the preliminary stages of trying to save themselves from the Ghoul incursion. Between this, and Touka seemingly better and moving on from Kaneki leaving for Aogiri, and she is looking into going to college. It seems like this was a time skip or something. Again, there was nothing really saying, so I am just going with hunches.

Listen, I am trying to get into this series, but it’s hard. The season structure is really off, and the plot is moving at a pace that makes molasses look like a waterfall. I don’t know why people are so obsessed with this show right now, and at this rate, I may not. Maybe I was expecting more from the show because of the hype. Maybe I was just expecting more because of how it’s the headlining show on the Dubbletalk block. Either way, this show has me full of disappointment. Maybe next week, maybe?
