Review: Adventure Time “The Visitor”

That title is something I thought would never happen. Check out our first review of the adventures of Finn and Jake after the jump!

Spoilers!

So, Cartoon Network finally heard my pleas and prayers, and moved Adventure Time back to the 7:30 time slot. If there’s one thing Adventure Time is good for, it’s keeping the continuity going for a long while, and going back to something that seems small when it happens. With that said, there’s a lot of open strands in the plot.

“The Visitor” occurs right after January 22’s episode, “Astral Plane,” and brings Finn’s father (back) to Ooo. These tie back to the first two episodes of the season, “Wake Up,” and “Escape from the Citadel.” In a round about way, it also ties into “Gold Stars” from last week, only because of Sweet P and the Lich. So, if you haven’t been keeping up, start watching. You have a lot of backstory.

Bringing Finn’s father back around brings closure of sorts to that story, even though you know that Finn’s dad will keep popping in and out as the series goes on. Finn realizes that the father is a complete dick, not only because of how his father uses the little villagers to get his escape pod working, but Finn can’t tell when Martin is telling the truth. As far as that goes, he lies about everything. Think about this. From when Martin crashes, until Finn sends him off, Martin made these villagers stop tending to their corn. Then, the night before, he does his best to destroy what crops the villagers had left. Why, you ask? Well, the best answer is Martin is the perfect self-centered douche.

Like normal, the attention to detail is fierce. You can tell that Martin is somewhat afraid of Finn, only because of how Martin screwed Finn over. There really isn’t much more of a good reason to lie about it, unless you just want to stick with the complete douche route. To be honest, they both fit very well.

Now, what is the big thing we can take away from “The Visitor?” Well, if whatsays is actually true, Finn’s mother is from a land far away from Ooo. Martin talks about how he was on a boat with her, and he had to fight sea monsters to keep Finn safe. While I believe anything making Martin seem heroic is false, I feel like he is telling the truth about Finn’s mother. Frederator, can we please get a name for her, soon? Calling her “Finn’s mother” may get rather cumbersome.

“The Visitor” kept the season theme going, which is all about Finn’s biological family. We all know Jake’s parents are going to be Finn’s family, but going into season six without knowing one shred of Finn’s familial background. I am glad to see Martin, and also glad to see him go. This is a pivot point to hopefully have Finn travel to other lands on the planet. I wouldn’t mind seeing Martin play the antagonist as Finn goes to find Finn’s mother, because then it would unravel how terrible of a person he really was.

All in all, while “The Visitor” wasn’t in the top echelon of Adventure Time episodes, it sure was a great episode to watch. Martin is entertaining as the manipulating douche, and Finn’s uncomfortable interactions show that there is the bad blood still runs deep. Catch this episode ASAP.
