Bubble SG Review: Heartland Hubby ”Bowling For Love / New Friend”

Spoilers Below

The pilot episode of Heartland Hubby started out fast and furious, and I was curious to see how the second episode would pan out.

My favourite part was with the talking stray cats, Bobo and Chacha. They seem like the old uncles I always see at the void decks of HDB flats sipping their kopi-o and chitchatting about life. This time they drool (literally) at a sexy female cat star, and the show even manages to get a few choice cat jokes past the strict Singapore television censors.

Cats aside, there’s a bowling showdown between two teams, and apparently all four characters are awesome bowlers. They score mostly strikes with a few spares, complete with showy kungfu moves that would make no sense in real life.

“But I won the game for you!” Teh Peng exclaims to Molly when she leaves after the showdown in a huff. All she wanted was a special anniversary celebration. I have to say that it’s quite true how the show portrays Singaporean men as clueless uncles who don’t know much about romancing their partners. But this mainly applies to the older generation, of course!

Winnie also has a little romantic trouble with a new character named Milo and both speak in British-accented english because they are prodigies. Winnie beats him in the bowling competition and he can’t handle it. But hold on! Being only ten, isn’t Winnie a little young to start dating?

Unfortunately, this episode wasn’t as good as the pilot. Yes, it’s about the Singaporean way of life and it does hit the spot with the foreign workers and the way some of the characters talk. But it lacks something – something more exciting. Since it’s an animation, I wanted more sparks and action, not just everyday drama which this show does a good job with. I didn’t want to just smile, I wanted to laugh out loud. I finished this episode wanting more.
