Review: Black Dynamite ”Mister Rogers’ Revenge or Please Don’t You Be His Neighbor”

Spoilers Below

PBS gets a fat check from the government which means Mister Rogers’ Hood isn’t going anywhere…or so the host things. Ironically enough, Black Dynamite and the Whorephanage head to a live taping of the TV series as way to celebrate the kids’ birthday. The faculty opts to go to the toy store and buy some toys for the kids, problem is, all of the toys are rather depressing. Mid-way through the taping, the network greets Rogers back stage and have an impromptu meeting in an effort to make money. Unfortunately, our fabled TV host just SNAPS and kills all of his bosses. He comes back on the set packing an AK and takes the kids on a trolley ride to a staged kidnapping. Black Dynamite and the rest of the faculty returns and JUST misses the Rogers exit.

The cops show up for the rescue, and they interview one of the shows’ co-hosts to find out that Rogers has some deep-seeded issues when it comes to defending children from armed forces. Naturally, Black takes all of the blame for the orphans being kidnapped, and the SWAT look to be not match for Mister Rogers and his kids. A second wave of SWAT come through and they get destroyed, but Black Dynamite’s able to get through and get into a cardigan Kung Fu match with Mister Rogers. The Whorephanage kids turn on Mister Rogers and the TV host breaks his own neck and heads into a penitentiary because he is clearly fucked up. Back at the Whorephanage, Black Dynamite throws the best birthday that the kids ever had.

Ohhh who doesn’t love a good Mister Rogers joke? Only this time around we don’t really get the pedophile Rogers like other animated programming may allude to, instead we get almost a heroes’ tale. All of the ways in which Mister Rogers used his ‘lair’ to thwart the armed forces was just too much to handle, and had me to the point of my sides in pain from laughing. The epic battle between Black and Mister Rogers was also very well done, and helped top off one of the better episodes of the season. I kinda thought the flashback was not needed and would’ve preferred to use that time for more battle time with Mister Rogers, but I really can’t complain much. Black Dynamite is having a Hall of Fame year.
