Review: Black Dynamite ”Roots: The White Album or the Blacker the Community the Deeper the Roots!”
Spoilers Below
It’s the very first ‘Black History Month’ and Al Sharpton unveils a controversial MLK statue for all the town to see. Also, Roots: The Miniseries is on TV, and with everyone at the local diner watching it eventually gains the ire of Sharpton and everyone else whom are surprised to learn that black people were at one point, slaves. This causes everyone to start rounding up all the white folk that come in through town (including Woody Allen) and force them into slavery. Bullhorn gets tagged by Sharpton as the Slave Auctioneer or ‘Overseer’, and people can NOT wait to get in on the action. Black Dynamite feels conflicted, Honeybee wants a slave that meets all of her sexual fantasies, even children whip their slaves into shape to make sure they do what they’re told. Black Dynamite is sickened by all of this and seeks an end to all of the controversy.
The MLK statue is ruining everything and becomes the focal point for white people to pick cotton off of the streets. Woody Allen tries to escape, but ends up being run over by Black Dynamite’s car. Turns out, BD is a pretty big fan of Allen’s work and offers to help him run off, but it looks as though Dynamite has bigger problems. We find out that his dojo has been turn into a spa for white people, and that Bullhorn has captured Woody Allen and threatens to throw him back into work. As a result, Black Dynamite calls a town meeting so as to abolish slavery once and for all, and ain’t NO ONE talking Black Dynamite down. The town puts white slavery to a vote, and we’ve got a dead heat until Base Head opts to vote against slavery. White people go free, but Woody Allen is worried about the self-esteem for the recently freed slaves. As a result, he thinks the white people should assimilate with their former black masters. Unfortunately, this does NOT include white people sitting in Black Dynamite’s seat at the chicken restaurant! Eventually, this causes the white people to hire Al Sharpton to riot for racial equality. The demonstration turns into a big fight, so Black Dynamite opts to destroy the MLK statue.
Yep, Black Dynamite is back and just as good as where we left off. And just like your typical Carl Jones-produced series, controversy is the show’s ‘A’ game, and I’m not sure if you’re going to find a more crazy series than this one, and yea that includes South Park. One of the things the producers like to do is take a subject, any subject, and pretty much put the idea in reverse. They did it last year with King Kong, they are doing it his year with Roots and soon Jaws.
This week’s episode was just as hilarious as anything on TV. Woody Allen getting constantly berated was just perfect in EVERY way, with the writers clearly not holding back ANY punches. The tits on the chicken breasts were a nice touch, and MLK rocking a big ol’ set of balls was certainly oft-putting.
The one thing I would’ve like to have seen more of…is action. Yea, we had the big rumble, but I would’ve enjoyed a bit more violent affair, and I think any semblance to a lot of the jokes that the Black Dynamite movie had are all but gone. What the series has become is a spiritual successor to The Boondocks which has officially ended this season on Adult Swim, but I’m hoping we get more of the sauce that made the Black Dynamite franchise what it was.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
