Graphic Novel Review: Regular Show Original ‘Hydration’

Spoilers Below

Rigby and Mordecai can’t friggin’ stand the sweltering heat, and they try everything to cool off. From pools, living in the fridge, even sleeping outside does nothing to quell the sweltering heat. Eventually, Rigby wishes on a shooting star that someone does SOMETHING to cool the guys off, however it isn’t a star.

The next morning, the whole park wakes up to a bad-ass waters slide! Benson loves it because he gets to charge the bejesus out of people, but we eventually see the slide turn into a three-headed hydra that comes to life and begins terrorizing the town. This thing seems pretty indestructible, so Mordecai and Rigby have to call upon a bunch of baby ducks to help beat the shit out of this snarling beast. Combined with the powers of Mordecai and Rigby, the ducks combine to form their trademark Eagle Man and at first we get a pretty back and forth battle. Unfortunately, no matter what the Eagle does, the hydra’s heads keep regrowing thereby making this fucker impossible to beat.

Mordecai and Rigby decide to split from the Eagle, and find the guy who created this machine. We find out that the hydra used to be a science experiment that went wrong, and the dude thought he had a disguise all picked out for the Hydra. This turned out to not be the case, so the trio devise a plan to destroy the Hydra once and for all. Back in town, the guys get the help of Eleanor and Margaret whom team up with the ducks and continue to battle the Hydra. The guys get eaten, but that was the plan, so when inside they force one of the hydra heads to be swallowed by another hydra head. This eventually causes the Hydra to become unstable and be destroyed. The park gets back to normal, and Mordecai and Rigby go play video games.

Now THIS is something that other TV-show comics properties can take a page from. Original graphic novels inspired by the comics series that they cover. This is a concept that you don’t see elsewhere, as a matter of fact, most graphic novels for shows like The Simpsons are just collections to be perfectly honest. And not only do we get a graphic novel, we get a novel that features content that rivals the TV show in terms of originality, humor, and dialogue. The fight scenes featuring Eagle Man were off the charts, and I’m hoping JG reads this shit and decides to adapt it into a half hour special because there’s a lot here that needs to be animated. We had SO many old-school Regular Show elements that I just think made the show better at one point. From Rigby and Mordecai fighting, to Margaret, we sometimes forget where this show came from and this is a great way to remember. Buy this shit, the SECOND you get a chance.
