Artist Creates ‘The Simpsons’ Outfit Grids

It’s no secret that cartoons have pretty easily-identifiable wardrobes when compared to other television shows, considering characters almost always wear the same outfits. The Simpsons, being one of the most popular shows in television history, logically has some of the most recognizable clothes as well.

Illustrator Bryan Espiritu (of The Legends League) capitalized on this feature, designing a number of outfit grids for various characters on the series, like Homer, Ned Flanders, Barney Gumble, Krusty the Clown, and Chief Wiggum. Each ensemble includes accessories as well.

“Back in November of 2013, I set out to smash every ‘cool’ kid’s @outfitgrid by creating a series of illustrations of the outfit grids of some of the coolest kids in the history of television cartoons,” Espiritu said on his Instagram. “As a fan of The Simpsons since I was a little kid, this was a lot of fun to work on.”

Although the idea is relatively simple, the outfits have a little something extra for the die-hard fans as well: subtle nods to specific episodes involving each character. For instance, Barney’s ensemble includes a polka dot bikini, worn in Homer’s “think unsexy thoughts” daydream (S5E9 “The Last Temptation of Homer) and Chief Wiggum’s contains a ball gag from when he was a hostage alongside Snake in the basement of Herman’s Military Antiques (S7E21 “22 Short Films About Springfield”).
