Golden Globes Change Rules for Animated Films

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group that runs the Golden Globe Awards each year, has revised the requirements for animated entertainment, group president Theo Kingma said on Tuesday.

The new guidelines sought to clarify what makes a movie “animated.” They decided that an animated movie had to be made up of at least 75% animation – where movement and characters are created or changed frame by frame.

This change would affect motion capture films like 2004’s The Polar Express and 2009’s A Christmas Carol, which would no longer be included in the animation category. However, the 75% specification would still include movies like 2006’s Happy Feet, which, although mostly made up of animation, also included scenes of motion capture.

Additionally, animated films in languages other than English will be included in the best animated movie category for the first time. This gives a feature like the 2013 Japanese historical drama The Wind Rises, written & directed by the great Hayao Miyazaki, a chance to take home the top animation prize.

On the flip side, non-English animated films will no longer be eligible in the live-action category for foreign films.
