Less Than Jake Release New Animated Music Video

Ska-punk musicians Less Than Jake have released a video for their newest single, “Do the Math,” and turned to animator Matt Frodsham to make it all happen.

The video is reminiscent of a lighter (in both tone & color) version of Disney’s Fantasia at times, with a slew of inanimate objects coming to life as anthropomorphic beings. (Except this one hasn’t given me nightmares…yet.) There are a whole bunch of dancing musical instruments and clocks; a boogying bong; ample destruction, consumption, and explosions; and a whole lot of Pez. On the weirder side (if you didn’t find that first list to be odd enough) there were a couple of tacos beating a piñata, a hotdog being decapitated with a saw, and a pair of clocks urinating on a saxophone and a trombone.

Despite the actions being somewhat dark, Frodsham (and the song itself) made it all come out in an upbeat and smile-inducing way. Even though I’m not particularly a fan of the band, I was still amused by the effort thanks to the animation – more so than I expected. And probably more so than I would for their other songs & videos (I generally don’t care for music videos in general.)

“I’m a lifelong fan of Less Than Jake,” Frodsham told Fuse. “There’s always been that one song on each record that perfectly aligned with my head space at the time of release, for better or worse. ‘Do the Math’ is a perfect example of this. I took the opportunity to reflect the band’s trademark of delivering a pretty heavy subject in an entertaining way.”

“Do the Math” is off the Gainesville, Florida-based band’s eighth studio album, “See the Light,” which was released last November.

Less Than Jake has been cranking out tunes since 1992 and can be seen on this year’s Vans Warped Tour.
