David Guetta Drops Another Comic-Inspired Music Video

Following in the footsteps of his last two songs, “Bad” and “Shot Me Down,” French DJ David Guetta has released another music video with animation that looks straight out of a graphic novel.

“Blast Off,” the third single off Guetta’s upcoming sixth studio album, features Australian singer/DJ Kaz James in addition to a sampling of Van Halen’s “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” in the background.

The video features a dude skateboarding around his city and playing guitar while street thugs give him ‘tude and a ginormous, green she-beast emerges from the ocean to wreak havoc on the landscape. It’s displayed in an animated comic book format, with plenty of action, and speech bubbles containing most of the lyrics.

I’d like to refrain from critiquing the song itself, but then again, I’d like to do a lot of things in my life that don’t end up working out – so here we are. Considering the song obviously pulls its main riff from Van Halen, you’d think the artists would want to make their mark with lyrics. Not the case, as the words almost exclusively consist of the phrases “So put dem (sic) hands up higher,” “Let’s smash this party up,” and a couple other generic party phrases that could be part of any song in this genre. Is this what gets the kids going nowadays? Cripes, I’m barely into my late twenties and I already feel like my life has turned into the South Park episode “You’re Getting Old,” where all new music sounds like electronic beeps and fart noises.

But I digress. Guetta does his thing, and people apparently like it. If you happen to be one of these folks, do yourself a favor and at least check out the video. It’s really the only creative achievement related to “Blast Off.”
