Comics Review: Regular Show Annual #1

Will Regular Show’s take on the annual comic be any better than the bombs of annuals past?

Let me start with this: I hate the format of annual as I think using shorts are just bad practices. However, these were actually pretty good. That’s saying something considering Regular Show’s terrible comic track record.

Let’s go with a brief recap. In “Sky Kicks,” Mordecai bought a new pair of Sky Kicks. He shows up Rigby, who takes a turn in the shoes. He fails a dunk as bad as LeBron failed in the Finals, so he takes an air pump to the shoes so hard, that it launches him to the God of Basketball. He charges Rigby with shoe abuse, and Rigby needs to beat God in a slam dunk contest. The God of Basketball slams one hard, and Rigby almost fails, until Mordecai shows up in Pops’s car. Rigby alley-oops to Mordecai, who slams it down, and they both escape.

“Wi-Fi Madness” has Mordecai and Rigby betting that one can outlast another being cut off from all electronics. Their hallucinations bring them what looks like the Devil, who wants to digitize them so he can drain their souls. His mention of pizza makes Mordecai and Rigby really hungry, so they just leave for pizza. Mordecai then decides to smash the phones so they can live off the land.

“Video Game Genie” tells the tale of Rigby getting a bunch of old games, with an unmarked cart. Turns out that it’s a Video Game Genie, who will give Mordecai and Rigby 6 real life cheat codes. They get level select, big head mode, unlimited hit points, unlimited ammo, (I think a food fight) turbo mode, and unlimited lives. With the debt paid, the Genie leaves, while Mordecai and Rigby go to play Street Puncher.

“Muscle Scouts” looks like it was drawn for the show. It has Muscle Man completing community service for breaking a soda machine. It doesn’t work out so well, because the end result is Muscle Man attracting bears to the park, teaching the kids to steal nachos, and teaching them to veg. Benson then tells him he screwed his community service, and to clean the park or he’s fired.

All of these stories were actually very fun to read and I didn’t find myself dreading what was next, which is a stark surprise from what I’m forced to deal with normally from this series. My pick of the book is “Video Game Genie,” because who didn’t go through their childhood wishing for a Game Genie for real life? It just spoke to me. The only thing that bugged me was that the Genie said they can have 6 wishes, but they only really got 5, but the premise was enjoyable enough to look past that. The book on a whole was really good, with no bad stories. Trust me, I am as surprised as you.
